Wheels Of Power is a non-profit project whereby used wheelchairs and pediatric equipment will be sent to the village of La Troncal, Canar Province, Ecuador. These wheelchairs will bring freedom, power, and independence to handicapped children. Their lives will be transformed with the gift of mobility. This project came about as an inspiration from my thirteen year-old son, Nicholas, when he told me about a sad experience while vacationing in my parents’ hometown, La Troncal. With tearful eyes he said, "Mami, while I was in the market, I saw this little kid without legs dragging himself on the streets, trying so hard to catch up with his friends. To protect his little hands he had rubber- tire scraps to propel himself forward.” In earnest he added, “Mami, we have to do something about it." Wheels of Power is the liaison between donors and disabled children, who will have the opportunity to attend school and learn new skills, helping them to avoid becoming beggars and eventual burdens to society. With these tools they will have power and a world of possibilities: learning skills, being able to mobilize from one place to another, and becoming assets to society. |
